Meetings and Conferences

The BSPP holds an annual Presidential Conference which BSPP members can attend for a reduced fee. The conference always incorporates the PH Gregory Prize which is awarded for the best presentation made by a young scientist. BSPP also supports a number of other meetings throughout the year. Suggestions of themes for these generally come from BSPP members.

This list of meetings here is by no means comprehensive. If you wish to publicise a plant pathology-related meeting, please contact the webmanager. Meetings are also announced in BSPP News and Plant Pathology: please contact the Programme Secretary Dr Steve Whisson,  for further information. Abstracts of some previous meetings including BSPP Presidential meetings and the International Congress of Plant Pathology held in Edinburgh in 1998 are in the BSPP archives.

8th International Conference on Pseudomonas syringae pathovars and related pathogens
Oxford, UK, 31 Aug to 03 Sep 2010

The 8th International Conference on The 8th International Conference on The 8th International Conference on Pseudomonas syringae pathovars and related pathogens is traditionally an intimate and exciting meeting of scientists from around the world - we aim to continue this tradition. The pathogenic varieties affect a wide variety of plants and new diseases are frequently emerging. To cope with and treat P. syringae diseases requires research to understand the biology and epidemiology of the organism and its host as well as interaction with the environment. The conference will cover a wide range of topics including:

  • Pathogenicity and virulence mechanisms
  • Genomics and bioinformatics
  • Evolution
  • Taxonomy and systematics
  • Ecology and epidemiology
  • Plant responses
  • Diagnostics and Disease control
  • Insights from related pathogens
We also welcome attendees who work on other bacterial pathogens such as Xanthomonas, Erwinia, Burkholderia and Ralstonia, or who have related research questions such as the role of effectors in plant pathogenesis.

Talks will be held over a period of three days with ample time provided for poster sessions and networking.

We very much hope that you will be able to come to Oxford in 2010!

AAB meeting: 3rd Symposium on Potato Cyst Nematodes Conference
Harper Adams University College, UK, 14 to 15 Sep 2010

Harper Adams University College, in partnership with the Association of Applied Biologists, is hosting an international conference on potato cyst nematode management. The event is being held on September 14-15th in the new Regional Food Academy at Harper Adams.

Dr Pat Haydock, Leader of the Nematology Research Group at Harper Adams comments:`This conference follows on from those held in 2000 and 2005 and has been extended to two-days. On the first day we have presentations on developments in nematode biology, diagnostics and the influence of legislation. This is followed in the afternoon with field based demonstrations including trap-cropping, biofumigation, resistant cultivars and nematicide application. The day concludes with a barbeque supper. Day two is concerned with the practical management of potato cyst nematodes considering both individual control components and an integrated approach`

The conference will be relevant to all those concerned with PCN including agronomists, potato growers, crop protection specialists, regulators, researchers and students.

`We are pleased to welcome a range of speakers from the UK and throughout the world including France, Belgium, Norway, Russia, Serbia, Canada and Australia and hope that discussions will enable management strategies for this important pest to be improved`.

To book a place at the conference go to the Association of Applied Biologists website at www. aab.org.uk or by phone on 01789 472020
