Plant Pathology by Agrios does not need to be recommended, it is now for many years a constant companion for innumerable students and teachers. This is an essential book for students, for teachers as well as for researchers for the fundamentals in this area.

There are tremendous advances and changes in the area of improving the quantity and quality of food by chemical and other means. For those not directly involved in this research it is hard to keep the track and therefor one relies on reviewing papers which sumarize the latest trends. This book is one of those examples where you can find the latest developments in extended review like contributions. In 8 chapters you will be informed on the impact of diseases and disease control on crop production, fungicide classes (chemistry, use and mode of action), natural product-derived fungicides (antibiotics), fungicide resistance, Strobilurins, Biological Control, Systemic Acquired Resistance and novel approaches to disease control. It is always good to have such a book in the shelf just to update ones personal knowledge in this important field.

In the prefeace it is stated that the book provides a text for a plant pathology course as part of a general education curriculum and that students with no previous study in biology will be able to use it. And yes, that is true. In 14 chapters plus a glossary the basic understandings of plant diseases are developed. It covers the Irish Potato Famine, Pesticides, Disease Epidemics, Genetic Engineering among other well selected topics to demonstrate the connection between plant diseases, agriculture and food production. Students and the interested layman should read it to get an exciting introduction to what plant pathology is and to encourage them to study plant pathology. But also scientists and teachers will be captured by this extraordinary book.
