The focus of my research is the cell biology of plant-pathogen interactions. I work closely with Paul Birch and Steve Whisson and other members of the strong Phytophthora team in Dundee. The majority of our work focusses on the notorious oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans but we also have an interest in Phytophthora tree pathogens. Phytophthora pathogens manipulate plant defence responses on multiple levels, suggesting complex exchanges of signals and a variety of effector functions. We have been at the forefront of pathogen effector studies for more than a decade. I did my PhD on an obscure plant virus at CSIRO Plant Industry in Canberra. I then moved to Scotland, initially working in Karl Oparka’s group on plant virus movement, plasmodesmata and the plant secretory pathway. In the early 2000’s I started to apply my cell biology expertise in the Phytophthora field, which has proven fruitful.
