The Open Plant Pathology (OPP) initiative supports and promotes openness, transparency and reproducibility of scientific research data and methods applied to plant pathological research and applications. OPP strongly believe that building a social infrastructure through a welcoming, engaged and diverse community is key for sharing knowledge and supporting others for adoption of a new culture.

Dr. Del Ponte holds a DSc in Plant Pathology from Universidade Federal de Pelotas (2004) with a one-year visit to Cornell University’s Bergstrom Lab. He worked as a postdoc associate for two years in a project involving disease risk assessment and prediction at Iowa State University’s Yang Lab. Currently, Dr. Del Ponte works at Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) where he has responsibilities for teaching and mentoring masters and doctorate students. He strongly advocates for an open and reproducible research model and culture, which he believes will ultimately contribute to a more accessible, transparent, and reliable science. This led him to co-found the Open Plant Pathology initiative together with Dr. Adam Sparks.
