Lockdown bursaries to support undergraduate remote working projects in plant pathology
Every year the BSPP funds bursaries supporting undergraduate students working on short research projects during the summer vacation.
A number of bursaries have already been awarded for this year. It is impossible to tell, but it is unlikely that institutional return-to-work protocols will allow all such projects to go ahead as planned. Other students will be at a loose end, having had their plans for the summer derailed.
The BSPP is therefore issuing an additional call this year, focusing on research projects that can be done remotely.
Projects could include elements of literature review, or bioinformatics, or reanalysis of an existing data set, or mathematical modelling, or any combination of these. The length of projects is also flexible: anything from 4 weeks to 10 weeks is acceptable. The only constraints are that projects must be possible to do via remote working (with support from a supervisor), must involve some research component, and must include significant plant pathology.
Applications are invited from supervisors on behalf of an identified student. Students should be in the middle year(s) of their degree course. Up to 10 bursaries will be awarded on a competitive basis. A particular supervisor may submit more than one project proposal.
Students will receive a sum of up to £250 per week to cover expenses. In the event of a successful application, cheques will be made payable to the institution at which the student will work. The institution should arrange payment in arrears subject to satisfactory attendance and performance.
Students will also be granted a year’s free membership of the BSPP.
The final payment should be made only after a short report (500 words maximum), completed by the student, has been submitted to BSPP via the supervisor.
Notification of the results of applications will be made after consideration by the Education sub-committee of BSPP Board.
