There are four deadlines each year for submission of applications;

The last day of February, 31st May, 31st August and 30th November

Applications must be received by the deadline between three and six months before the date of the conference or visit at the latest.

The BSPP Travel Fund is open to members of the Society to assist with expenses for conferences, study tours and visits. Students are particularly encouraged to apply. Awards will be made by a Committee of the Board whose decision shall be final. In judging applications, the Committee will take into consideration the nature of the visit in relation to the work of the applicant and the aims of the Society. All applications will be considered on their merits.

Please note:

  • The size of award will depend upon the number of applications and the funds available, but will not exceed half the total costs of the proposed visit.
  • For any member, there must be an interval of at least 24 months between successive visits supported by BSPP Travel Awards.
  • No more than one Travel Award will be made to members of a single research group to attend the same conference, join the same study tour, etc.
  • You must have been a member of the Society for at least 12 months by the time that the conference or visit supported by the BSPP Travel Award for which you are applying takes place.
  • Applications must be submitted online only by the relevant deadline.
  • Awards must be taken up within 12 months of notification.
  • The Travel Awards Committee reserves the right to disregard any of these guidelines for applications of the most exceptional merit.
  • If additional costs of care incurred by attending a conference would be prohibitive to attending, the BSPP has initiated a Carer Support Grant – see details, eligibility and how to apply here.

It is a requirement of any award that a report on the conference or other purpose for which the Travel Fund grant is awarded is sent to the vicepresident@bspp.org.uk and the editor of BSPP Newsletter for publication. All travel reports must be submitted within a month of travel. Please see the instructions for authors for the type and format of report required.

  • Important note: You must have been a member of BSPP for at least one full year by the time the conference or visit supported by the Travel Award for which you are applying takes place.
  • REMINDER: You must be a BSPP member to apply. Please make sure you use your registered email address so we can confirm your membership.
  • Please include relevant information e.g. information about costs, information about study tour and visits to be made, etc.
  • Maximum 300 words approximately
  • Costs in UK pounds

  • Explain briefly below
  • (a) available and (b) applied for
  • Please list all previous awards from any of the BSPP award schemes with dates
  • Endorsement by Supervisor or Head of Department

Please ask your supervisor (if you are a student) or your Head of Department to write an endorsement of your application (retired/unemployed members, see below). He or she must state:

How you will benefit from this conference or visit and

Why full funding for the conference or visit is not available from your institution.

This endorsement must be sent by email to the chairman of the BSPP Travel Awards Committee: vicepresident@bspp.org.uk. It must be sent by your supervisor or Head of Department personally, not by you. It must arrive no later than the relevant deadline for submission of applications (see below); late submission will mean that your application will not be considered.

For retired or unemployed members, please provide a statement indicating how you will benefit from this conference or visit

  • Submission of application:

The form must be completed in full; an incomplete form will lead to an automatic rejection of your application. Only electronic submissions on the official form will be accepted. There are four deadlines for submission each year: the last day of February, 31st May, 31st August and 30th November. Your application must be submitted no later than the deadline, and between 3 and 6 months before the conference or visit takes place. The Travel Awards Committee will endeavour to respond to your application within 18 days of the deadline.
