A specialised metabolite produced by a fungus which is harmful to humans or livestock. These substances are essentially fungal defence compounds, against mycophagous mites or other fungi competing for resources. In some case as phytotoxins. Important examples include aflatoxins, ergotamines, fumonisins, ochratoxins, patulin, trichothecenes, zearalenone. See Fig. 10.5.
