Nominations for BSPP Board Vice-President
We welcome nominations (including self-nominations) for the role of second vice-president on the BSPP board, starting from January 2025. The second vice-president will normally serve on the board for 4 years, progressing to hold the role of vice-president (2026), president-elect (2027) and president (2028). During this time they will be expected to actively support the aims of the society by supporting its core activities and undertaking the specific responsibilities associated with each role.
Under our present board structure, the second vice-president has the responsibility to support the strategic direction and activities of the society through attendance at four board meetings per year, and specifically through oversight of our annual prizes, and of applications to the Promotion of Plant Pathology fund and our Undergraduate Vacation bursaries, in consultation with the Outreach Officer and Education Secretary respectively.
In successive years the successful applicant will have responsibility for our Travel Fund as first vice-president, for our Event Organisation funding and BSPP Ambassador programme as President-Elect, and for the overall strategic direction and management of the society and the organisation of the annual meeting as President. The annual meeting and other society activities are also ably supported by additional members of the BSPP board (for full details see:
https://www.bspp.org.uk/society/board/).
Nominees should have a substantive record of professional employment in plant pathology and related disciplines, evidenced by publications, patents or activities such as extension to practitioners. Applicants should also provide evidence of their commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion and to supporting a positive research or work culture.
Individuals will normally hold a PhD and the date of nomination will normally be no less than 10 years since submitting their PhD thesis, or 10 cumulative years of employment subsequent to the year in which their PhD thesis was submitted (excluding career breaks). Nominees will normally be longstanding members of the British Society of Plant Pathology (3 or more years).
To submit a nomination please provide:
A brief description of the nominee’s experience in plant pathology and commitment to the aims of the society (up to 500 words).
A brief statement explaining the nominee’s suitability to take on this responsibility (up to 500 words).
Any contextual information that you think should be taken into account by the society in reaching a decision (e.g. information on career breaks).
If you have any questions about the role and the application process, please contact the current President Prof. Gail Preston (president@bspp.org.uk) or President-Elect Prof. Matt Dickinson (presidentelect@bspp.org.uk).
Nominations should be emailed to the Board Secretary, Trisna Tungadi (Secretary@bspp.org.uk) by the 31st October 2024.
