Following on from the highly successful Plant Defenders event, BSPP member Luca Steele has run a ‘Plant Defenders: Leafing a Legacy’ competition!
As part of the International Year of Plant Health in 2020, Luca launched Plant Defenders which has led over 8,600 junior plant enthusiasts through the unofficial Girlguiding Challenge Badge. The ‘Leafing a Legacy’ challenge caught up with our Plant Defenders to see what they’ve been up to since! The winners were:
1st Place Winner: 9th Skewen Beavers – created a wildlife area with bug hotels, bird houses and bird food. Every week they ensure the plants are watered and the bee bath is full. The Beavers also visited their local community allotment to learn more.
Runner up: 28th High Wycombe Scouts – made a planter for their local area, and filled it with plants.
Runner up: Amington Rainbows and Brownies – revamped two community garden boxes at a local school. They even made the boxes into a fairy garden!
The British Society for Plant Pathology helped launch these unofficial Girlguiding challenge badges through the BSPP Promotion Fund and the campaign has since also been supported by DEFRA.
