Vacancy: BSPP Secretary 2020-2022

1st July 2019

The BSPP are looking for a new Secretary for a three year term commencing in January 2020.  The Board wishes to recruit a new Secretary in advance of the official start date of 1st January 2020 to allow for an months overlap with the current Secretary, Dr Sarah Holdgate.

The Secretary is responsible to the Board of BSPP for organising meetings of the Board.  More recently the Secretary has been involved in liaising with external consultants on changes to the Articles of Association of the Society.  Whilst these changes should be completed by the end of the current Secretary term, continued liaison with the Solicitor and Governance Consultant will be required in the future to ensure that the Society remains compliant with requirements from the Charities Commission, Companies House and wider legal issues.  Although the Secretary deals with the external consultants, decisions relating to any changes are made by the Board as part of the wider strategic direction of the Society and not by the Secretary alone.

In addition to these main responsibilities, the Secretary:

  • Organises and minutes the four Board meetings per year and one AGM per year
  • Provides assistance to the Treasurer in compiling Annual Returns
  • Responds to general queries to the Society, normally being the first point of contact

The Secretary prepares a report for each of the Board’s four meetings a year and the annual general meeting.  The total time involved in the position is approximately ½ a day per week on average over the course of the year.  It is important to note that the post is not (and under our charitable status cannot be) remunerated but does give the satisfaction of contributing to the premier Plant Pathology Society in Europe and contributing to its smooth running and influencing its future.

Further information on the role can be obtained from Sarah by emailing secretary@bspp.org.uk To apply for the position please contact BSPP President Prof Dawn Arnold, president@bspp.org.uk
